Make sure the name Idara Essien PMP® sticks with you, because anytime you need to change up your brand or someone to manage a project for you, she and her team at KOANA Consulting should be the first people you call.
Armed with a background in Computer Science from the University of Calabar in Nigeria and extensive experience working in Project Management and Brand Management, she is no stranger to the industry.
Idara Essien opens the curtain on her journey to running her own business and some lessons for those thinking of jumping onto the entrepreneurship bandwagon.
So Idara, tell us a little bit about KOANA Consulting?
Well, we are a small group of creative minds that change everyday due to lots of reasons, first and mostly, we don’t have a physical office yet! However we work virtually and meet when absolutely necessary.
We are a consulting management firm that specialises in project management, brand management, digital design, strategic consulting and content development. We pride ourselves in being able to tailor each solution uniquely to our clients. We definitely offer the best practices to the task at hand.
Share your journey with us and what inspired you to start your company?
After graduating from university, I worked in three organisations over a period of 5 years. I wasn't satisfied with the quality of work I was engaged in, the office bureaucracy and culture shocked me to my bones. So, in my fifth year I knew I couldn't continue in that way. I had a God given purpose and it was time I explored it without the constraints of man made rules and antagonistic attitudes. That brought about the birth of Koana Consulting.
What makes you smile with pride in terms of achievements and what do you love about what you do?
Taking a lead role in managing a lifestyle and hospitality project from inception to completion.
I love this job because of the the creativity and flexibility. Being able to stand and think outside of the box.

To date, what's been your biggest challenge and how did you overcome it?
Engaging a team of young minds to stay committed to a course. I haven’t overcome it yet! It’s work in progress.
For those starting out, what's the biggest piece of advice you can give to other entrepreneurs ? Do your research and do not be afraid to start. However, be consistent despite the hurdles you face each day. Also make sure you test the waters, and just start. Start small, be consistent, keep growing and learning. These are valuable assets that no one can take from you.
One other thing, looking back at it now, I've learnt that you should never listen to those who say it can’t be done.
"KOANA’s approach to consulting is to create, manage, modify and re-vamp the personality of our clients businesses."
